A note on summer enrollments
Pacific View Charter School (PVC) is a direct-funded, TK-12 WASC-accredited charter school situated in Oceanside and Moreno Valley. PVC offers the flexibility of multiple learning models, where students have access to an independent study format that uses a hybrid personalized learning model. Pacific View also runs two calendars, a year-round format (Track 1) and a traditional school year (Track 2). Pacific View is not a summer school. However, due to the nature of our school program, with the year-round calendar for high school students that begins each year on July 1 and our ability to enroll students continuously throughout the school year, many students enroll at Pacific View for a shorter period of time. Although all students who enroll at Pacific View are offered the state required 175 days of instruction, these brief enrollments in July have created a ‘summer school effect’ at Pacific View as more districts and counselors have referred students to our school to catch up on credits or get ahead for graduation.
Although these enrollments provided benefit to the students and districts they are coming from, Pacific View is a year-round school and resources need to be spent on long-term enrollments so that PVC students can get all of the benefits of being enrolled in the school. Going forward, PVC will not be able to accommodate students who plan to enroll at PVC for the summer only. Students and families who choose Pacific View as their high school are expected to do so for the long term. By law, students can only be enrolled in one high school at at time, and students enrolling at Pacific View must only be enrolled at Pacific View. We will continue to begin each school year on July 1 for our Track 1 students who need an extended year and in mid-August for our Track 2 students, in full compliance with state law, and we will continue to enroll students throughout the year until we reach capacity. We understand that this represents a change to some of our families who have enrolled at Pacific View for a short period of time in the summer and that it is difficult when options are removed, however, we must focus school resources on those students who are committed to long-term enrollment at Pacific View.
